Europeans came West following paths often created by American Indians, many of which later became county, state and federal roadways. But what to do with those people already present? If you cannot kill them all, then declare them subhuman, portray them with degrading stereotypes and caricatures, and move them out of sight. Once dehumanized, the American Indians were already ‘toast.’ The cross speaks to the complicity and encouragement of these actions by the Church.
