On January 1, 1978 (New Years Day) I drove four brass rods (two foot lengths) into the earth of Georgia. Using Plains, Georgia (the birthplace and private residence of President Jimmy Carter) as the point of departure, each rod was placed along the roadside, on the roads in the Plains vicinity, approximately the same distance out from Plains, such that by connecting the locations to which these rods pointed a square was roughly indicated.

On March 29, 1978 (the anniversary of the ratification of the twenty third amendment to the U.S. Constitution) I drove eight brass rods (two foot lengths) into the earth around Washington, D.C. Using the White House as the point of departure, each rod was placed along the roadside in the D.C. vicinity, approximately the same distance out from the White House, such that by connecting the locations to which the rods pointed, a circle was roughly indicated.
